What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to trauma. It's based on the realization that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma, and they then can return to a greater sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness. This work is done in a one-on-one session.
Vicki also focuses on touch skills that help people recover from early childhood trauma that developed prior to language. These touch trauma tools are very useful when we have a history of multiple (complex) trauma.
Somatic Experiencing and touch work for trauma can help people with:
~ A history of early childhood trauma
~ Car accidents / injuries that continue to cause pain and dysfunction
~ Chronic pain and movement disorders
~ Chronic panic - anxiety and bracing patterns
Why the combination of Feldenkrais and Somatic Experiencing?
We can continue to 'brace' - or lock up - our musculoskeletal system long after an accident and injury has taken place. This bracing can also lead to chronic pain and lack of ease, as well as coordination and balance issues. Animals typically give themselves 'down time' after a stressful event--they may hide in dark places, and typically shake the trauma out of their systems. Our higher human brain allows us to compartmentalize what our lower brain knows was a threat to our existence. An example of this would be someone who has a car accident, gets checked out in the ER and goes back to work as if nothing happened.
Both Feldenkrais and SE are body-based methods to enhance a person's life. These two body-based modalities dove-tail very well together.
